Abstract

The treatment of chemical waste generated in university chemistry laboratories is a matter of great importance and significance for environmental protection and the health of individuals involved—in one way or another—in teaching and/or research at these higher education institutions. The objective of this study is to analyze the current situation of the chemistry laboratories operating within the Faculty of Science and Technology at UNI and, based on the findings, to propose a Chemical Waste Management Plan applicable to all teaching, research, and third-party service activities involving the use of equipment, apparatus, and reagents in these laboratories. There are no specific regulations regarding this issue at the national level or within the National University of Itapúa. While the faculties’ internal regulations do include some general considerations, they lack detailed procedures for the proper treatment of generated chemical waste—procedures that are required by international standards and, above all, by safety and environmental protection requirements. A comprehensive chemical waste management plan is essential for effective waste treatment.

Keywords: chemical waste, chemical waste management plan.
